Lagavulin

Slow distillation turned into a round, deep Islay benchmark.
The Lagavulin 16 is a classic of Islay peated whisky. Heavy smoke with a long trail of sherry sweetness, and thanks to the long maturation it's rounded rather than rough. It's rare to find a peat lover who hasn't passed through the Lagavulin 16.
It also picked up an unlikely following through Nick Offerman in the US sitcom Parks and Recreation. As his character's love of Lagavulin spread like a meme, curious beginners started reaching for a bottle.
The common misconception is "peat is for obsessives only." The Lagavulin 16 actually lowers that threshold. The smoke is big, but sweetness and softness hold it up, making it a fair first peat to attempt. Slowly, neat, by the fire on a cold night — that's when this whisky shines brightest.
Lagavulin 16 is treated as the textbook Islay and enjoys steady fame. In the US its profile rose sharply as Ron Swanson's drink in the sitcom 'Parks and Recreation', and actor Nick Offerman filmed promotional videos for it himself.

Lagavulin rounds Islay's heavy peat more than most. Slow, long distillation files off the rough edges, laying dried-fruit and sherry sweetness over deep smoke. The 16 Year sets that balance, and the Distillers Edition pushes the sweetness further with a PX sherry-cask finish.
John Johnston founded a licensed distillery on Islay's south coast in 1816, on a site that had seen illicit distilling before. It sits on the same shore as Laphroaig and Ardbeg, the three often grouped as southern Islay's great distilleries. It runs under Diageo as a Classic Malts flagship.
In Korea, Lagavulin is recommended to those who want strong peat without the rough edge. Unlike the sharper peat of Ardbeg and Laphroaig, its sherry sweetness reads as rounder, so it's often the step up from first peat. The 16 is also popular as a gift.
To carry both deep peat and sherry sweetness, an aroma-gathering Glencairn or copita is standard. The 16 sits in the low 40s, fine neat; the 12 Cask Strength opens widely with a drop or two of water. With aromas this rich, a big ice cube shuts them down.
